VISUAL MEDIA: STORYTELLING THROUGH NARRATIVE LIFE EXPERIENCES
PHOTOMONTAGE & COLLAGE
Clients & Guests,
What is a Photomontage & Collage?
Photomontage tends to create a more organized presentation or the telling of a story.
A photo Collage is a collection of pictures that are put together to make a single picture.
In 2018, I shot my first wedding at the beautiful Stratosphere Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, my best friend was getting married.
The bride's father had this epic look with his sunglasses, great hair, and his dapper sports jacket with a flower. I thought to myself this would look like a GREAT shot, asking him to pose in a variety of ways.
The man of many faces, 4 different pictures edited in various colors for effect. This is a good example of how editing can change everything about a picture.

After editing the wedding in 4 different colors (2 Color & Black/White versions), I decided to post on Instagram all the pictures side by side, with people loving the look, effect, and feel of the picture.
After posting several pictures in this technique, the wedding pictures became my signature look.
This idea turned into a concept, morphed into a what I call VISUAL MEDIA: STORYTELLING THROUGH NARRATIVE LIFE EXPERIENCES
Every picture tells a story, and my goal is to tell yours with my signature look.

93% of your interaction is based on nonverbal communication.
This comes from one of the leading Journals in Communications called Communication Theory and staple scholarship in graduate school at Eastern Illinois University.
This statement always stuck with me, continuing to drive my shooting style to this day.
The process is very simple where you pick your favorite 2 to 10+ pictures, creating a montage in a digital format.
I will edit the RAW pictures (15-45 megabytes), and you will receive all the pictures in a Digital file along with the collage.
For example, if you order a 3 digital picture collage, you will receive a total of 4 pictures.

You can then order all the pictures in one picture collage for various prints in my Shop with a diversity of frames, Metals are my favorite with a generous coupon code.

A second option, each picture will be printed in a separate frame where you CREATE your own Photomontage in any room you desire.
This is a truly custom order where I have 3 examples that can range from 2 Square Feet To 30 Square Feet if you desire (3 to 47 panels). I would recommend picking your digital pictures you would like and send you examples of the rendered finished product.
Your mind only limits your creativity!
Using Motorsports as a Model, I tend to overshoot Events (typically anything) because of what I learned in my Manual Photography class in college (2000) by Dr. Robert C. Wiseman, shooting for National Geographic all over the world, specifically in Kenya. He said you often could not recreate those exact sequents of events so by adopting his philosophy of Overshooting because, in his Era, you shot manual film. You might shoot 30 rolls of film on Safari in Kenya or South Africa, and pick five shots if you're lucky.
I might shoot 50 to 100+ pictures of a racer or static car/motorcycle and pick 1-3 shots to potentially publish on Instagram or my Portfolio.
Navigating back to my Motorsports example, shooting a Motorcycle or Car around a challenging track often tells a dynamic story for the Athlete. This could be a turn, a "chase race" between 2 or racers, or just a group of shots of that person from their Track Day Xperience.
Essentially, any sequence of pictures.
Any collection of pictures will tell a story that is unique to that individual that will create memories and epic stories for years to come.
Below is the definition of Collage vs. Photomontage if you would like to indulge in your mind.
My role is to provide you with the ultimate Visual Media Experience with a concept I call “Storytelling Through Narrative Life Experiences” for your content creation.

The word collage is from the French. It literally means “pasting”, or “gluing”. The medium of collage is about gluing images and objects to a basic background. The word ‘collage’ is a noun that describes a composite picture. It is an abstract form of art. It can be made from any artistic medium. Pieces of paper, newspaper, cuttings, photographs, drawings and almost any form of abstract or textured additions. The “collage” is normally an arrangement of the pieces. However, it’s common for there to be no logic in placing them. A collage can be about the complete disarray of the images in the work. The layout is more artful than logical.
In terms of photography two entries appear in the Oxford English Dictionary about the term “collage”:
Before embarking on the making of a photomontage, it should be understood that the term refers to a photographic process entirely and not to the scissors-and-paste method (known as collage) practised by some in the name of photomontage.
J. Deschin “New Ways in Photography”; 1936
This shows the use of ‘collage’ to refer to a multi-image composite of photos is incorrect. A multi-image picture created by a photographic or digital process is a photomontage.
It appears, the definitive difference between collage and photomontage is the method of creation. This appears to be supported by a later quote too…
The technique of ‘collage’ would be improperly described as a photographic process.
Alan Pryce-Jones (editor) “The new outline of modern knowledge”; 1956
The term “collage” is historically incorrect with respect to photography. However, it is used in modern everyday speech. This may be part of the evolution of language. Despite this, “collage” and “photomontage” come from separate processes. The methods of creation differ. The guide to correct use of the term “collage” lies in the preparation, content, and organization of the piece.
The collage is an artful, illogical, arrangement. There is little or no theme in the images used. The pictures in a collage are about art, texture, arrangement or pattern. Traditional collage uses cut or torn shapes, objects and pieces laid out for overall impact. The individual parts have no particular value in their own right.
The “photomontage” by comparison, is an arrangement of photos to show off a common theme in the images. The theme is normally presented in a logical way. The presentation of a photomontage can be artfully done. However, the use of graphic art is more appropriate than classic art. Remember, photos have a regular shape. In collage the pictures are cut or torn to fit the space. The use of shape influences the layout in a multiple-image picture. Photomontage tends to create a more organised presentation or the telling of a story.
